Penguins Land League-High 14 on Academic HL Spring Teams

   
Indianapolis, Ind. -- Youngstown State spring athletic teams had a Horizon League-high 14 student-athletes recognized as part of the conference's academic all-league squad which was announced on Wednesday. The Guins had eight track and field honorees, two baseball, two men's golf, one women's tennis player and one women's golfer named academic all-league.
   
Penguin student-athletes to earn all-academic honors are Alisha Anthony (track and field), Lauren Blase (track and field), Jennifer Grayson (track and field), Adam Kagarise (track and field), Phil Klein (baseball), Joe Lahmon (track and field), Irena Lanc (tennis), Eric Marzec (baseball), Aaron Merrill (track and field), J.D. Sheppard (track and field), Brittany Stillwagon (golf), Spenser Sulzener (golf), Michael Turner (golf) and Kayla Witmer (track and field).
    Repeat selections from their respective 2008 squads were Kagarise, Lanc, Lahmon, Merrill and Sheppard. Overall, it is the ninth time Sheppard has been named to a Horizon League All-Academic team during his YSU career, including his fourth year as a member of the outdoor track and field team.
    Butler had 13 student-athletes named to the team to finish second to YSU. Detriot had 12 while UWM was the only other school in double figures with 10.
    The Spring Academic All-Horizon League Teams are selected by the Horizon League Sports Information Directors and Faculty Athletic Representatives. To be eligible for consideration, nominees must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale having competed at least one year at a member institution while earning at least 24 semester hours or 36 quarter-hours of credit.
