Soccer Close Out Regular Season With Two HL Games, Celebrates Senior Day Sunday
Youngstown -- The Youngstown State soccer team (3-9-3, 0-5-1 Horizon League) closes out the regular season with two home matches this weekend and will honor its six seniors on Senior Day on Sunday. The Penguins host Wright State, Friday, Oct. 23, at 4 p.m. and Cleveland State, Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. Both matches will be held at Stambaugh Stadium.

the Horizon League with 5.88 saves

The Penguins dropped a tough 2-0 decision to Horizon League foe Valparaiso on Oct. 16, but rallied to tie Butler, 1-1, on Sunday, Oct. 18. Sophomore Kara Cooper knotted her eighth goal of the season to lift the Penguins to the tie against the Bulldogs.
Scouting Wright State
Wright State enters this week with an overall record of 9-6-2 and a 4-2 mark in the Horizon League, which ranks them second in the league standings. Leading the Raiders is Bekah Bonny with six goals and one assist for 13 points and Brittany Persaud with five goals and three assists for 13 points. Jen Agueci has posted three goals and two assists for eight points. Goalkeeper Meghan Hackerson has tallied six shutouts and tallied 72 saves this season.
The Wright State Series
This will be the 12th meeting between Youngstown State and Wright State dating back to 1996. The Raiders have won each previous meeting, including a 2-0 win at Dayton in 2008.
Scouting Cleveland State
Cleveland State is currently 3-12-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the Horizon League. Leading the Vikings is Marley Greiner with three goals and two assists for eight points. Natalie Daniels is second on the team with six points, scoring two goals and assisting on two others.
The Cleveland State Series
This will be the seventh meeting between Youngstown State and Cleveland State dating back to 2004. Cleveland State owns a 3-2-1 advantage in the all-time series and has won three straight games against the Penguins, including two consecutive 2-1 overtime victories in 2007 and 2008.
Seniors Honored Sunday
On Sunday, the Youngstown State soccer program will honor six student-athletes playing in their final home match at Stambaugh Stadium. The Penguins will honor seniors Kate Bonn, Rochelle Boone, Jodi Bowlen, Natalie Brady, Jordan Gapczynski and Mariah Snyder.
Guins Go "Extra" Mile
In eight home matches this season, the Penguins have played extra periods six times. The Penguins own a 2-3-3 home record and have played four double-overtime contests and two single-overtime matches. The Guins also own a 2-1-3 record in matches that have gone to overtime.
Brennan, Cooper Move Up Career Goals Chart
Junior Lauren Brennan and sophomore Kara Cooper are charging up the YSU all-time goals scored chart. Brennan, who has two goals this season, ranks third all-time with 14 career goals. Cooper, who has eight goals in 2009, has moved into fifth place on the all-time chart with nine career goals.
Cooper Inching Up Single-Season Lists
With eight goals this season, sophomore Kara Cooper moved into a tie for third place on the YSU single-season goals scored chart. She is currently tied with junior Lauren Brennan and former Penguin Jen Argiro, who each scored eight goals in 2007 and 1997, respectively. Cooper also moved into a tie for fourth place on the single-season points scored list with 18. She is tied with Argiro, who posted 18 points in 1997. She also needs one more point to move into a tie with Brennan, who scored 19 points in 2007.
Snyder Notches Sixth Career Shutout
Senior goalkeeper Mariah Snyder posted her sixth career shutout in a 0-0 double-overtime tie against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sept. 27. She also recorded two saves. Her six career shutouts are tied for the all-time record and her five in 2008 set the single-season mark.
Cooper Among League Leaders
All season long, sophomore Kara Cooper has ranked among the Horizon League leaders in several statistical categories. Cooper ranks second in points (18), points per game (1.20), goals (8) and goals per game (0.53). She also ranks third in shots per game (2.93) and fourth in total shots (44).
Snyder Among Goalkeeper Leaders
Mariah Snyder has played in just eight contests this season but has made her presence felt in the net. Snyder ranks second in the Horizon League with 5.88 saves per game.
Dressler Notches First Points
Freshman Olivia Dressler played an important role in the Guins’ 2-1 come-from-behind, overtime win against Robert Morris on Sept. 20. Dressler assisted on both Lauren Brennan’s game-tying goal and Kara Cooper’s game-winning goal in overtime.
