Emig Wins Flight Title; Kathary/Hamning Take Doubles Crown

    Olean, N.Y. -- Youngstown State junior Rob Emig won his singles flight, while the duo of Patrick Hamning and Michael Kathary won the No. 1 doubles competition as the men’s tennis team opened fall competition at the St. Bonaventure Invitational over the weekend.

    Emig posted a 3-0 mark to earn the No. 5 singles flight crown. On Sunday, Emig defeated Nathaniel Fleming of Saint Francis (Pa.) by a 6-3, 6-2 score to claim first in his flight. On Saturday, Emig picked up a 7-6, 6-2 win over Buffalo’s Mitch Zenaty. Also on Saturday he beat St. Bonaventure’s Luis Guevara in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

    In doubles play, Kathary and Hamning posted a 2-1 to earn the flight victory. The duo beat Buffalo and St. Bonaventure, but dropped a tie-breaker decision 8-6 to Saint Francis.

    Tariq Ismail posted two wins at No. 1 singles winning against Saint Francis and St. Bonaventure. Hamning earned a singles win at No. 2 against the Red Flash on Sunday afternoon.

    The Penguins return to action on Sept. 18 when they begin play at the three-day Michigan State Invitational.
