school victory with a 34-21 win over
Akron in the final game of the
season…This is the 20th
year of competition for the
Penguins.
Record Set - A total of nine school records, five
individual, four team, are set this
year.

Records
- Frank Horvath sets two more
Penguin marks, both single season
records (most points and most
touchdowns) as the Penguins could
manage once again (for the ninth
time in their football history), but
a .500 record, 4-4-1.
1962 (6-3)
Horvath Again
- Running back Frank Horvath
completes his collegiate career with
eight Penguin records to his credit,
three more of which he set in this
year.
1963 (5-4-1)
The “Foot” in Football
- Dick Hartzell concludes his
placekicking career with five of
Youngstown’s scoring marks…Earlier
in the year, he set the career
records for the most field goals and
most points after touchdown.
1964 (6-1-2)
Very Close-
Against Southern Connecticut with
less than two minutes remaining in
the game and the Penguins trailing
27-21, quarterback Dom DeMarte
scrambles into the end zone from
five yards out, the kick is good,
and the Penguins win 28-27…They
weren’t that lucky against Central
Michigan on the road as the
Chippewas prevented the Penguins
from an unbeaten season, 25-20.
1965 (6-2)
Silver Anniversary
- The Penguins launch their 25th
anniversary of playing collegiate
football with a convincing 35-14
victory over Central Michigan-the
same team that prevented the
Penguins from having an unbeaten
season last year.
Longest Punt Return- The Youngstown record for the longest
punt return is set against Central
Michigan as well when Al Grossi
laterals to Ray Rohan on a punt
return and Rohan races 92 yards for
the score…Penguins are now unbeaten
in 15 of their last 17 contests.
1966 (5-3-1)
Rushing Mark -
Running back Dick Adipotti races 304
yards against Souther Connecticut to
set the single game rushing mark.
1967 (4-5)
Penguin Backs - Penguin running backs set the team
record for most yards gained rushing
in a single season with 2,214.
New Title - Youngstown becomes a state institution.
Youngstown State University becomes
the new name for the school prior to
the season.
1968 (3-6)
More Records
- The Penguins set seven more
records, six team and one
individual, including Dave
DelSignore’s 11 pass receptions in
one game (Southern Illinois) and a
total of 98 points by both clubs
(Pensacola Navy)…The Pensacola Navy
is quarterbacked by former Heisman
Trophy winner, Roger Staubach.
Freshman QB - Denny Klembara throws for the unheard
yardage of 391 total yards in a
58-38 loss to the Pensacola Navy.
1969 (2-6)
Longest Interception Return
- Don Cramb returns a Southeastern
Louisiana pass 97 yards for a
touchdown, a new record for
Youngstown State.
Another DelSignore Mark - After setting the Penguin
mark for the most receiving yards
with 843, Dave DelSignore now owns
all of Youngstown State’s receiving
records and is named to the
Associated Press All-American Third
