Penguins Continue Busy Road Slate
The Youngstown State volleyball team
has another busy week on the road
with five matches in five days,
including four contests over a
two-day period.
The Penguins take on Mid-American
Conference member Akron, Tuesday,
Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. at the James A.
Rhodes Arena.
Over the weekend, the Penguins
participate in the Navy Chesapeake
Challenge on Sept. 8-9. Youngstown
State opens the Challenge against
LaSalle, Friday, at Noon, and takes
on Providence at 4 p.m.
On Saturday, the Penguins face the
U.S. Naval Academy at 9 a.m. and a
yet to be determined opponent later
in the day.
The Penguins and Zips will meet for
the 47th time and the second time in
the last two seasons. Akron owns an
impressive 39-7 record in the
all-time series between the two
schools, including a 3-0 victory
last season.
The Zips, who are 3-3, are led by
Jennifer Stewart with 3.40 kills and
3.20 digs per game. Molly Rutledge
is also off to a solid start with
3.10 kills and 1.20 blocks per game.
The Penguins open the Navy
Chesapeake Challenge with a matchup
against 4-3 LaSalle at Noon on
Friday.
LaSalle and Youngstown State have
met twice before with the all-time
series tied at 1-1.
Leading the Explorers is Christa
Dominick with 3.32 kills per game
while Stephanie Owen is averaging
2.52 kills per game. Setter Caitlin
Conner owns a team-best 10.54
assists per game.
The Providence Friars enter the Navy
Chesapeake Challenge with a 2-1
record. Jess Storer leads the team
with 2.90 kills per game while
Jeanette Toney is a close second
with 2.80 kills per game.
This marks the first meeting between
the Penguins and the Friars.
The Penguins open day two of the
Challenge against Navy at 9 a.m. The
Middies and the Penguins have faced
each other three times with YSU
owning a 2-1 advantage in the
all-time series.
Leading Navy is Beth McArthur with
2.94 kills per game and a .316
hitting percentagee. McArthur is
also averaging 1.75 digs per game.
Nikki England is second on the squad
with 2.79 kills per game while
Jessie Sims leads the team with 4.25
digs per game and averages 2.75
kills per game.
Up Next
After playing the first 11 matches
of the season on the road, the
Youngstown State volleyball team
finally returns to the friendly
confines of the Beeghly Center when
it takes on No. 23 Ohio State,
Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m.
The Penguins also host the 2006 YSU/Counrty
Inn and Suites Classic, Sept. 15-16,
at the Beeghly Center.
The Penguins take on Bowling Green
and Morehead State on Friday at 11
a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. On
Saturday, YSU faces St. Francis
(Pa.) at 1 p.m. and Duquesne at 7
p.m.
Last Time Out
The Penguins went 1-2 last week
defeating Canisius in five games,
3-2, and falling to Buffalo, 3-0,
and Fordham, 3-0.
Boscaljon Named All-Tourney Team
Freshman Ruth Boscaljon made an
impression last weekend and was
named to the Western New York
Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Boscaljon averaged 4.45 kills and
1.55 blocks per game while finishing
the weekend with a .358 hitting
percentage.
Heinz, O’Hara Net Career Highs
It was a good night for Youngstown
State’s freshmen class last Friday.
Not only did Ruth Boscaljon net a
career high in kills, but freshmen
Allison Heinz and Kaitlin O’Hara did
as well. Heinz and O’Hara each
pounded 14 kills to help the
Penguins past the Golden Griffens.
For the week, O’Hara averaged 2.73
kills per game and Heinz averaged
2.00 kills per game.
Penguins Host Buckeyes
For the first time in school
history, the Youngstown State
volleyball team will play host to a
team from the Big Ten Conference
when it hosts Ohio State, Wednesday,
Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Beeghly
Center. The Penguins and Buckeyes
have met only one other time in 2004
when OSU defeated YSU, 3-0.
Penguins Among League Top 10
Freshman Ruth Boscaljon and senior
Cari Leslie are listed among the
Horizon League statistical leaders.
Boscaljon is second in the league
with 1.43 blocks per game while
Leslie ranks fifth with 3.81 digs
per game. Boscaljon also ranks
eighth with 3.24 kills per game and
10th with a .275 hitting percentage.
Everhart Named to All-Tourney
Team
Youngstown State sophomore Karla
Everhart’s gritty performance at the
Dayton Flyer Classic earned her some
well-deserved accolades. The
5-foot-10 setter was named to the
all-tournament team after averaging
7.10 assists, 1.10 kills, 2.40 digs
and 0.50 blocks per game.

Youngstown State freshmen Ruth
Boscaljon and Kaitlin O’Hara are
tough to hit the ball past.
Combined, the duo is averaging 2.16
blocks per game.
Everhart Sets Career High
Sophomore setter Karla Everhart
continues her improvement with each
week. The 5-foot-10 setter set a
career high with 65 assists in YSU’s
3-2 win over Canisius. In that
match, she surpassed her 2005 season
total of 57 assists.
Recruiting Class Ranked in Top
100
The Youngstown State 2006 volleyball
recruiting class of Ruth Boscaljon,
Linzie Evans, Allison Heinz and
Kaitlin O’Hara has been ranked in
the top 100 nationally out of 317
schools and received
Honorable-Mention accolades from
Prepvolleyball.com.
The top 30 schools ranked one
through 30, with the next 15 listed
as “Highest Honorable Mention,” 15
more receiving “High Honorable
Mention” recognition and 32 more
achieving “Honorable Mention”
status. Penn State and Texas earned
the top two spots on the list.
Penguins on Ice
Youngstown State will begin the 2006
season without two key contributors.
Junior Jessica Fraley will miss
approximately two weeks after
sports-hernia surgery. Freshman
Linzie Evans had eye surgery to
repair a detached retina and will
sit out at least a month.
Leslie Approaching Two Milestones
With a season comparable to last
year, senior Cari Leslie has the
opportunity to become just the fifth
player in school history to record
both 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a
career. She currently has 766 kills
and needs 233 to reach the
1,000-kills plateau. She has tallied
987 digs and needs just 13 digs to
eclipse the digs milestone.
Cindric Countin’ Down
Senior Amanda Cindric just eclisped
the 900 career digs plateau and
needs just 98 more to become the
10th player in school history to
reach the milestone. Cindric is
averaging 1.70 digs per game. |
