Green Bay Takes Three Straight Sets to Win in Four Over YSU
Youngstown -- Green Bay hit .278 and blocked 11 attacks en route to a 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-14 victory over the Youngstown State volleyball team on Friday at the Beeghly Center.
Holly Visser had a match-high 20 kills and hit .381, and Kelly Mischler had six blocks for the Phoenix. Ruth Boscaljon and Brittany Grove both had 12 kills for YSU, which hit .167.
The Penguins had a lead in every set, but the Phoenix rallied early in all four.
The second set had 12 ties and seven lead changes before Green Bay pulled ahead late by scoring five of the final six points. YSU led 21-20 on a Tasha Reid kill, but Green Bay scored three straight to go up 23-21. A Boscaljon kill cut the score to one, but Green Bay got the last two points on two errors by Grove.
YSU led 6-3 in the third before Green Bay went on a 6-1 run to go up 9-7. The Phoenix extended the lead to 16-10, and YSU was able to get within one at 18-17 before Green Bay won 25-22.
The Penguins then pulled ahead 5-1 in the fourth set before Green Bay went on a 6-2 run to tie the score at 7-7. After the score went to 10-10, Green Bay went on a 6-1 run to go ahead 16-11, and YSU got no closer than four the rest of the set.
YSU will host Milwaukee on Saturday at 2 p.m.
