Coach Martin Speaks with Curbstone Coaches as Season Approaches

Youngstown -- Youngstown State head women's basketball coach Cindy Martin spoke of optimism surrounding the upcoming 2009-10 when she addressed the Curbstone Coaches on Monday at the Blue Wolf Banquet Center in Boardman.

Martin was joined at the luncheon by senior forward Rachael Manuel and assistant coach Bernard Scott. Martin and the Penguins will hold their first official practice this Saturday at 8 a.m.

Martin gave an overall progress report, Manuel discussed teach chemistry and the preseason, and Scott spoke about YSU's seven newcomers and local recruiting efforts.

"It was a pleasure to speak to a room filled with such history and tradition of YSU," Martin said. "I am proud of all the hard work we have done over the last year-and-a-half to get ready for our second season.

"Rachael spoke confidently. She has worked so hard this summer, and we expect her to have a big senior year on the court. Coach Scott represents our program with such professionalism.  He is doing a tremendous job with on-floor instruction, recruiting and helping me hand-in-hand to rebuild this program."

Founded in 1958, the Curbstone Coaches works to preserve and perpetuate the memory of athletes who brought favorable reflection and distinction to the community, according to its stated purpose.

meets almost every Monday from September through May for a luncheon meeting. YSU coaches are some of many celebrities that serve as guest speakers.
